Final BLOG

This class was very useful for me and I have learned a lot of new staff. I learned about symbols and archetypes. I have learned about myself, my own archetype. I found out that I am an orphan and it was not a big surprise for me, but during the class I learned a lot about orphan archetype. I read the book Coraline and it helped me as well. I mean while my reading I was looking at the main character – Coraline like at me. It helped me a lot to understand her and her actions. “Archetype can also help you to realize your potential in life and face with who you really are. My archetype helps to transform my view of this world to others and help me realize creativity and effectiveness. “Coraline” by Neil Caiman helped me to understand my archetype in different way." (from my earlier blog)

I also learned symbols and how to see them and see what they mean. We discussed the Shakespeare poem ”Macbeth” and in the beginning it was very hard for me, but with the help of professor I kind of started to understand it better and after seeing all symbols, they actually helped me to understand the poem. And the same with “Goblin Market”. Knowing symbols really helped me to read it and understand it.

So I think this class helped me a lot in understanding literature and I think in future it will be easier to read books, especially poems.

I was impressed by the final project of Benjamin Chivas.First of all the whole idea was really cool and I never actually heard about it that close. I mean I heard about it but I never faced it. So his project I think was the best and it impressed me in many ways. The quality of the project was very great, and the music choice….was fantastic. The music was scary and was changing just in time, in a right way. And the whole information and the sound of “these things”, it was really amazing.

He did a really good job, and I am sure that he spent a lot of time. His project made me interested in these sounds and I think that I would like to dig more information about it and make my own research. Because if it is a true and we can hear these voices, so maybe they are trying to worn us or to tell us something important. I think I will definitely do my own research.

Entry 4.2

I was done with my project and the only thing left was to upload it online, so everyone can see it.I did it on youtube page  but it didn’t have any sound. Then I tried to do it again and make my page private, but still it had only video and no sound. It happened because youtube recognised the song and in copyright issue was not allowed me to have the sound. My next step was that I tryed to put it on my facebook page, but again the space was not enough. After that I tried to make my facebook page  bigger with space and finally I uploaded the video online. So it was working fine with  the sound. And next step was – to make it public,so everyone can see it.
So my classmate helped me. On video  on facebook I copied embed code and plug it in my blog page.I never knew that, so I learned something new for me and very useful in future. And finally I got it. And it took only 1.30 hour.   J

Blog entry 4.1 Upgrade

So I found all pictures that I need for my project, so I think that the biggest part of it is already done. And I found a song in a good quality, so I can just record it to my movie maker program.
So this is one of them.I think it is very cool

I also looked through the effects in movie maker program, and I found the ones that I am going to use for my video.
I think that the most hardest part was to cut the song with pictures to make it real.I mean every word in song should have the picture at the screen. And it is not that easy, because sometimes for 2 seconds you need to change 3-4 pictures. And also I have to left some time for effects, so it was a detailed work, took long time.
I think that next week I will be done with my project
I actually pretty done with my project.I  made all effects that I wanted to do and right now  I need only to upload it in youtube and finish my written part.
I hope you guys going to  enjoy it.

Blog Entry 3.4

So I decided to do the video on the song Eagles: "Witchy women". I listened to the song and I think it is goes with the thyme of the class, and it is kind of interesting representation of witchy women.
So what I am doing I am listening to the song and imagine in my mind pictures of it. So I go to Google and try to find the pictures that are fitting the most. So far I found a lot of them already, but not enough, especially of witch women. Because the character from the song is not a witch, it is a witchy women, and it is kind of different thing.
So I will need couple steps to make it done:
  1. I have to record the song in movie maker program
  2. I have to find all pictures that will fit my song
  3. I have to add pictures to the movie maker program and plug them one by one
  4. Make sure that the words from the song are  at the same time picture are appearing
  5. and do effects to make it look interesting

I think that to the next week I will be done with pictures already and the song in movie maker program. And I will be left with only effects.

Entry 3.5 Coraline- (second version)

According to psychologist Carol Pearson, all of us have archetypes within our psyches. My primary archetype is orphan. According to freedictionary.com Orphan means:
1.  A child whose parents are dead.
2. A child who has been deprived of parental care and has not been adopted.
3. A young animal without a mother.
4. Lacking support, supervision, or care.
When we think of orphans we think of sad lonely children with no hope or future, who are always trying to find someone, who can give them happiness. An orphan is a child that has lost both of his or her parents. The orphan is a metaphor for something that is very deep inside us, something that makes us feel lonely and don’t give us normal life. And only after we let this thing out, we can start normal life.
We always have feeling of sympathy to orphans, because they are sad and lonely and they are trying to find happiness, because now one cares about them (That how they are used to think). I think it is a negative thing, because knowing that this person is orphan, you already have some feeling of pity. And that feeling is not always the right one. The positive trait is that orphans are usually good people and they value many things that others don’t.
After reading the book “Coraline” by Neil Gaiman, I realized that there are a lot of archetypes there. Some of them are: Miss Spink and Forcible are wizards when they read tea leaves, Old crazy men is a protector, who warns Coraline about the door, the black cat is a mentor; the children in the closet can be see as guides, because they give Coraline advice one urge her to flee from this place and look thought the stone (Chapter 7): “Flee! Flee, while there’s still air in your lungs an blood in your veins and warmth in your heart. Flee while you still have your mind and your soul” (85). And of cause the mail character – Coraline. I see her in many archetyper. First of all as a hero and explorer and, second of all as an orphan. She is yang and love to explorer. She is intelligent, curious and courageous. She is not taken serious because of her young age. So Coraline is look like me in some ways, because she is lonely all the time and her parents don’t have time for her, so she feels sad and lonely.
Even after she feels lonelier, because her parents were taken by her other mother. Although the other mother claims to be a good, real mother to Coraline , she is still alone and doesn’t want to accept her other mother. This is displaying some of the characteristics of the orphan archetype.
So I see my archetype active especially in Chapter 3, when Coraline is  home all along and no one are there for her. Her mother doesn’t coming back and she had left Coraline on her own. I can say that during the whole book Coraline is always on her own, she has conversation with only some people, because for the majority of time she is on her own: or in her own house, or in the other house in her other room or even when she is exploring, she always do it by herself:’ Coraline put on her blue coat with a hood, her red scarf, and her yellow Wellington boots. She went out” (13).
Knowing my archetype helped me like a reader to understand the book better and deeper. I can see the main character more brightly and I can understand what she feels and what feelings are driving her for actions. For example, when she is willing to save her parents - she will do everything and will try every chance to do it in order to find them, because she is very lonely without them and she doesn’t want that kind of life. And being a young girl she is afraid of a lot of things, but because she needs her parents she is exploring dark rooms and weird things. Being an orphan I can see that in myself as well, so it helps me a lot in understanding the book.
I think that others who knowing about my main archetype can understand the story better as well. Because they know me and the way I behaved, they know how I feel, so in the same way they can see this story deeper and more colorful, because they have a good example already –me.
Before this class I really didn’t know my archetype, so in many cases I was reading books and didn’t really was understanding many things. So I think that knowing archetypes and especially your own will help us to understand the literature and characters. I started reading in different way. For example, Coraline’s  story, I read it with more deeply understanding, especially the main character - Coraline. She is an orphan archetype, and so I am .So I understood her and her actions like I will do the same. For example, she rather to find her parents than return home without them. Because she was very lonely without them, so she ricked herself in order to find them. And I realized that I would do the same thing, and we are very similar. I can see how she was suffering and surviving. She is just like me.
Also knowing archetypes help us to see the main character from different sides. Like Coraline, she is also an archetype of the explorer when she seeks to find her parents and the souls of the tree children. She is also embodies the altruist archetype, because she sets out to find her parents despite the danger of herself. So being altruist helped me to understand how she sacrificed and gave to others. So knowing archetypes help us to read the literature differently and helps us to understand the characters.

The knowledge of archetype is very useful and can help you in many ways to understand this world and things around it better. It can help you to become more aware of this world, and everything that is around you. It gives you opportunities to make better choices in your live.
Archetype can also help you to realize your potential in life and face with who you really are. My archetype helps to transform my view of this world to others and help me realize creativity and effectiveness. “Coraline” by Neil Caiman helped me to understand my archetype in different way.

Blog Entry 3.3

I think I would like to do a sort of video with movie maker program, it will be or a song and I will illustrate it with pictures. The choice number two - I will find a poem or a story and read it in a scary way (unusual) and illustrate with pictures, and make some kind of video. So you can actually see the song or a story through my images. It is like when you read a book and then you watch a movie for this book and now you can see it.  I think it is a cool idea and it will be a good project for me.
For the song i think Eagles  "Witchy women"
For the story ,something with witches or ghosts.
I was also thinking to do a presentation on my archetype, but i think i will stay with video.it seems like more fun. but I think that the movie is more fun and that is wht i would like to do and will enjoy as well

Entry 3.2 Video for Macbeth

Macbeth (Polanski 1971) -- Witches Opening

These video is about witches and their reality.  If you watch the video you can see it first of all in the way they look – ugly women, old, and not pleasant at all. They are very weird with the things they are doing and the words that they are saying: “So wither’d and so wild in their attire”. We can see that they speak one by one and it sounds like a song, but not the pleasant one. It is one of the songs that make us feel danger.
We can see that they are very wild of baring somebody’s hand and also putting the blood on the top. So it is some of connection with dark side of the other world.
When the video starts we can see contract of different lights that mostly have dark colors. I think that this contrast of colors represent good with light colored and evil with dark colors. That is how we know from childhood that evil is someone who is dressed in dark ugly things and is very dangerous. So I can see witches here as a representatives of darkness. We see them in the middle of the night, and everything around them is unpleasant. So these thing make us believe and feel that evil is around.
Who is a witch??? From our childhood we used to draw old women with dark cloth and ugly face, and who only scares people around her. And if we watch the video, we can see that the same image of witch is right there. From all the times witches were dealing with magic things, but very dark magic. And the same in video we can see that they are baring someone’s hand and singing weird words.
William Shakespeare uses such things as dark night, deep water, black colors, and blood. So the same thing we can see in Polanski’s video.
They are archetypes of goddesses and destiny. These three witches represent the destiny and bad dark world. They are tree women that are doing some dark magic and it is very hard to understand them unless you are one of them.
I think this video is a good example of Macbeth by Shakespeare and you can see the witches in your real eyes.

Entry 3.1

On this picture that I have chosen, we can see 3 old women - the Three Witches or Weird Sisters. These women are characters from “Macbeth” written by William Shakespeare.
The picture is very dark and has only black, grey, dark brown colors. So I think that it makes the picture look more mysterious and supernatural. I chose this picture because I think that witches play important role in Macbeth. They are mentioned many times in a play. They appeared the first of the whole characters, so that is how the play starts .Later they meet Macbeth and tell him that maybe he should be a king in future and they make him to have this idea of becoming the king. So we can tell that they are important characters in the play.
From the picture you can see that they are doing something bad or mystery, that no one else can do and understand. It looks like they communicate with dark. So they are connected with dark, and that is what they like to do.
They represent this darkness, so just looking at them, you know already that nothing good you can expect from them, only bad things. They are also representing something supernatural, because they deal with dark and mystery things. They live in both worlds: the real world and the other, dark one. So we don’t know who are they.

I think that this picture is a great one for these characters. You can see them in dark and mystery

Blog Entry 2.2: -[ORPHAN]

According to freedictionary.com ORPHAN means:

1.
A child whose parents are dead.
2. A child who has been deprived of parental care and has not been adopted.
3. A young animal without a mother.
4. Lacking support, supervision, or care.

I think that Harry Potter is the best example of orphan archetype.  He is always lonely and he is yang and doesn’t have both of his parents, because they died long time ago and all his life he was by himself.
This archetype (orphan) is associated with sad pictures, where children are lonely, unhappy and poor, and they always try to find someone, who can give them love and happiness. So if you see the picture of Harry Potter, you can tell that he is very lonely and sad. And the own next to him is kind of friend, so he doesn’t feel that lonely.

We can see the orphan archetype everywhere: in mythology, fiction, fairy tales, and even in history.
The orphan is a metaphor for something that is very deep inside us, something that bothers us, something that makes us feel such feelings as loneliness, failure, and loss of someone very important in our lives. And many orphans don’t want to accept it, so they fight with reality. But we need to heal them and face the reality. So only after that we can start our normal life

Second picture I picked up is the one from movie “August Rush”. This movie is about a yang boy Evan, who is 11 years old. He is leaving in orphanage and have no parents, but deeply believes that they are alive. So he decided to run away in order to find his parents. Music is a main thing in this movie that at the end brought everyone all together. So it is a good example of orphan archetype that represents a lot of kids that live in orphanages and are looking for their parents.
We can see a lot of orphans among superheroes, such as Batman or Spiderman or even Superman. They are all orphans. Even in cartoons for kids such as Disney cartoons there are a lot of orphan’s archetypes:  Bambi or Cinderella
So we can see that orphan archetype is everywhere

Blog 2.1 ''Goblin Market'' by Christina Rossetti

Christina Georgina Rossetti was an English poet, who was born and raised in London. She was born in big family: she had a sister and two brothers. All her family was connected to poetry and writing. Her mother gave her education at home. Christina Rossetti was a devout member of Evangelical Church- her life was connected to church all the time. She is famous for her variety of romantic, devotional and children's poem. She started to write in early ages. Her famous poem was "Goblin Market". She wrote it when she was 31 years old. It appeared in her first poetry volume, Goblin Market and Other Poems, and was illustrated by her brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti. It is a long narrative poem that has irregular rhyme and meter.
The poem is about two young sisters, Lizzie and Laura, who were closed to each other, and about goblin men, who were selling fruits: “Come buy, come buy” their luscious and tantalizing fruits”. Lizzie didn’t listen to them and run home, but Laura was weaker  and wanted the fruits very bad. So this bad men  got her attention and she got too weak and decided to buy fruits. But because she didn’t have any money she paid with a lock of her golden hair and a tear that is more rare than pearl (127). Next day she wanted to have more and more fruits, but she couldn’t hear their voices anymore:”Must she no more pasture find, gone deaf and blind?”(258-259). Laura started to have withdrawal symptoms just like people who are on drugs do. Her hair started grew thin and gray and she refused to eat. Lizzie began to fear that something bad can happen to her sister and she decided to go to them and buy the fruit in order to save her sister’ life. Carrying a silver penny, Lizzie went to them and wanted to buy a fruit with the money. Goblins didn’t like it and smeared the juice and pulp of their fruit on her face. Lizzie ran home and with her  kisses saved her sister. And after years they both were married and lived happy lives.
This poem has a lot of symbols. Like we see two sisters are the main characters, and of cause they are symbols. I can compare these two sisters to Adam and Eve from the Bible. Lizzie was warned by Laura not to eat the fruit.and we can see that in a Bible  Eve was warned by God not to eat the fruit from the Tree. Laura, who didn’t listen is a symbol of victim .She eat the fruit ,so she did did forbid thing. Her sister Lizzie is a symbol of Adam, who tried to warn her sister not to take these fruits: “Their offers should not charm us, their evil gifts would harm us” (65-66).She is also a symbol of an angel, who is always next in order to help. In her sacrifice we can also compare Lizzie to Christ. As Lizzie took the fruit to save her sister’s life, the same  did Christ. He offered himself to take our place and saved all us. Goblin men are symbols of Satan, who try to do everything to make the girls eat the fruits.

There are a lot of fruits mentioned in the poem: ”Wild-free born cranberries, Crab-apples, blackberries, apricots, strawberries…..”(5-15). Fruits have different types of symbols in this poem. The goblins' fruit   symbolizes temptations of Adam and Eve from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  There are forbidden fruits ,that girls should not taught, just like in a Bible story, the only fruits were forbidden. I  can also see the forbidden fruit  in order of  female sexuality. In some way it also related to  females, their knowledge about the world.
I can also see the symbol of sisterhood: we see the  comparing  of  two sleeping sisters to a pair of "pigeons in one nest." (184-186).We also can see some flowers here. Flowers in "Goblin Market" are something beautiful and pure ,something that is opposite to goblin’s fruits
This poem has also archetypes that are very clear to see. Lizzie represents pureness and innocence; she is willing to help her sister no matter what. She behaves only in the best  way she can and she is like Jesus or even a  hero, because she saves her sister. She is also an angel, who always next to her sister, and always there to help her. Laura had the archetypes of the weakness and victim. The goblin men had the archetypes of many evil faces, such as Devil and  death, something bad. Fruits are sins that are following us all our life and if we are weak like Lizzie we are most likely have them a lot.
I understand this poem in different ways. First of all I see here a bible topic of the Garden of Eden, because it has two main  characters just like in a Bible story and it shows us, what can happened to you if you are trying to do bad things. Also I see this poem about sisterhood and family, how it is important to have ones that care about you and can save you no matter what. I personally believe that every person should have someone who cares of you and there are no closer people than your family.
I also can  see here a topic of sexuality. All these fruits are different kind of people that we meet in your life journey, and every person is different ,just like fruits. This poem teaches you to be very careful of picking up people in your life and specially bringing them close to you . It is also about personalities and how all people are different.

Blog Entry 1.3 Second version

I
I would like to introduce you my poem,  that is written by Russian poet Aleksandr Block.

You can see the original text and the second one is translated to English:

«In vino veritas

English translation:

“Stranger”

In the evenings, on restaurants

Hot air is wild and dull,

And reigns shouting drunken

Spring  and noxious spirit.

Far above the dust lanes

Over the boredom of country cottages,

A little gilded pretzel bakery

And hear a child crying.

And every night, beyond the barriers,

Wringing their hats,

Among the ditches are walking with the ladies

Proven  hearts.

Above the lake creak oarlocks

And a woman's scream,

And in the sky, to all accustomed

No point grimaces drive.

And every night, only one

Reflected in my glass

And moisture tart and mysterious

Like me, he and stunned.

And the tables next to

Lackeys sleepy protrude,

And drunk with the eyes of rabbits

‘In vino veritas! ’A scream.

And every evening at this hour

(Or is it just a dream to me?)

Waist, silk caught,

In the misty moving window.

And slowly passing between the drunken,

Always, without satellites, one

Breathing perfumes and mists,

She sits by the window.

And wafted by ancient beliefs

Her silky

And the hat, in mourning feathers

And in the rings narrow arm.

And the strange proximity shackled,

Look for the dark veil,

And see the enchanted shore

Amazing sea.

Deaf secrets entrusted to me,

I am someone's sun handed,

And all my soul meanders

Pierced by the wine.

The ostrich plumes

In my swing brain

And the bottomless blue eyes

Bloom on the far shore.

In my heart lies a treasure

And has the key to me!

You're right, drunken monster!

I know: the truth in wine.
                                    Aleksandr Blok

Blok, Aleksandr Aleksandrovich is a Russian poet who was born in 1880 in St. Petersburg and continued his work until 1921. His work became a tragic and deep, filled with a sense of catastrophic era. He started in the spirit of symbolism that is close to music and formed under the influence of romance.

Paradoxical combination of mystical and domestic, detached and everyday is typical for most creative Bloc as a whole. This is a distinguishing feature, and his mental organization, and as a consequence of his own, Blok’s Symbolism. Especially characteristic in this respect has become a textbook classic looks hazy silhouette matching "Stranger" .

The poem “Strange" by Alexander Blok belongs to the period of writing "terrible world" when the principal in the perception of a poet of the world have been feeling melancholy, disbelief and very despair. The atmosphere is not the beauty but the cruelty, lies and misery, and out of this impasse there.
This poem has a lot of symbols and represents symbolism as well. Symbol is a word that an author may use in his poem to represent some meanings other than the original. As a result, “Stranger” will have many hidden meaning based on the use of symbolism.
In the first stanza there are several examples of symbolism. These are: evenings, restaurant, reigns shouting drunken. Evening is a time of the day and in the context of this poem means that is dark, and it is time for mystery things to happen. Restaurant means a place, where people are going to spend some time, and have some food and drinks. But if you see deeper in this poem it is the embodiment of vulgarity, where only drunk people are around. Next symbol is "reigns shouting drunken", that represent vulgar world as well. However, the motive of intoxication in "The Stranger" is deployed on.
The second stanza of the poem also contains examples of symbolism. There are: child crying, women scream, moisture tart and mysterious. A child is a baby ,and a crying child is the one who is in need of something  and in the context of this poem is  a child that is scared of something. It shows that the atmosphere is not good for kids to be here. A woman’s scream symbolizes unhappy women that have to stay close to these guys in restaurant.
“Tart" and especially "mysterious" are epithets that  gives the wine a special evaluative sense, but the wine as if it were just a drink, "stun", intoxicating in a literal sense. Also we can see that world of "drunks with the eyes of rabbits gives the poem a vulgar sense again. Comparison with "rabbits" in accordance with the conventional wisdom views on this animal brings a shade of meaning “lust”.
In "The Stranger" all myth poetical meanings accumulated symbolism in the image of the sun: "Disco" meaningless, and the curve he was evidently unable to keep the grimace from vulgarity life. The word "curve", apparently, significantly and their affinity with the "curvature" as untrue, "drive" in "The Stranger" - the sun is wrong and unjust.

Block describes it the real world – prostitutes, the dirty streets with gutters, the kingdom of vulgarity, where among the pouring slops walk "tested wits" with the ladies.

In the evenings, on restaurants

Hot air is wild and dull,

And reigns shouting drunken

Spring and noxious spirit.
                                 (Blok)

What about the name “The Stranger”? Who is this person? It is a person you don’t know? Or do you know this person? In this poem it is a vague vision that emerged in a drunken poet's mind, a phantom created by drunken imagination. The action in "The Stranger" is also timed to the spring (we can feel spring air), although, in contrast to expectations, fueled by the symbolist tradition, the spring air is intoxicatingly fresh, and "wild and dull."

What about the lyrical hero? He is alone and surrounded by drunks all over. He rejects this horrific world of the soul, like a farce, in which there is no place for anything beautiful and holy. This world poisoned him, but among these intoxicating fumes appeared stranger. She by herself and her image awakens a sense of light and it  seems  that she believes in beauty. The image of her is surprisingly romantic and alluring and it is evident that the poet was still alive in the belief in goodness. Filth and vulgarity can’t tarnish the image of a stranger, reflecting the dreams Bloc of pure unconditional love. And although the poem ends with the words "In vino veritas", but the image of a beautiful stranger inspires confidence in a bright start in life.

In the first part of the poem with the help of symbols we see dirt and vulgarity of the world, and in the second - a beautiful stranger. So I can tell that his track can convey the main idea of Blok. The image of a stranger transforms the poet changed his poems and thoughts.
